Since 2021, the activities of MIRRI-IT are carried out within thematic working groups.
Currently, the following working groups have been defined:

• Microorganisms of food interest
• Microorganisms of agricultural, forestry and environmental interest
• Microorganisms of medical and veterinary interest
• Data and catalog management
• Certifications, especially on ISO standards relating to collections
• Molecular characterization and identification of microorganisms
• Common protocols and procedures
• Updating of the National Plan on agro-biodiversity
• Relations with scientific societies and foreign collections, promotion and communication
